The Golden Mile
On the long weekend we took a trip to Kalgoorlie also known as the Golden Mile. Apparently Australia's largest outback city. I lived up that way as a kid and it was incredible how much it had changed, it is a unique place never the less. It is a gold mining town in Western Australia and has one of the biggest open cut mines called the Super Pit. During the 60's and 70's the nickel boom was on and that started to change the face of Kalgoorlie but gold is still the big business there. The museum is very informative and has Mulga Bill's wooden bicycle. The story written about Mulga Bill in a humorous manner was taught in schools but I always thought he was a fictitious character, not so, as not only his strange wooden bush bike was there but a photo of him on it. There is a pub on every corner and generally with skimpy or topless girls at some time of the day much to the men's delight. The Railway Hotel/ Motel is an excellent place to stay, has just about everything and within walking distance to Hannan Street, the main street in town and opposite the beautiful railway station (if travelling by train, very handy indeed,) It caters well for families too. Kangaroos and emus are a common sight on the roads so keep your eyes peeled if you don't want an accident.
The most popular seasons for visitors coming to Kalgoorlie-Boulder are Autumn (March-May) and Spring (September to November) The wildfowers are out between July and October, and can look like a floral carpet. To see the history of the goldrush that started the golden mile visit Goldrush History
