Greece is too beautiful not to have these extra photos included I hope you enjoy them and make it to Greece. If you have already travelled there I hope you enjoyed the experience as much as we did. I won't bore you with our anecdotes - too many to recount.;-) but a brief outline of what we did was an independent trip but had most things booked before we left. We arrived in Athens and took excursions from the local tours. Wandered around the Plaka area and markets ourselves.,we weren't very impressed with the light and sound show, by the way. There is a park in Athens which has a mini zoo, While we were there a professor from the University heard us discussing it and offered to take us around to see the historic sites, we had a lovely day ending up with strong greek coffee at his favourite haunt.
The local tourist police proved very helpful too, while we were waiting to go back from the Acropolis he came over and offered to take us for a coffee, showing us some of the sights on the way. All in all the greek people couldn't have been more helpful. Find the best deal, compare prices and read what other travelers have to say about hotels in Greece
A day trip took us to some of the other islands before taking the ferry
to Mykonos, for a week, which was too long, although it was very beautiful
and we made friends with locals and tourists. We went to Santorini for
a week, which was fabulous a sort of warts and all place with plenty
to see and do. As in all the places we stayed, cats were a big feature
but in Santorin the dogs took over. We climbed the mountain to see Thera
and met up with people climbing up the other side. Akroteri, a Minoan
city on the south part of Thera, is being excavated. About 3-6 feet
(1-2 m) of ash fell on the city which had a population of about 30,000.
The residents appear to have been successfully evacuated prior to the
eruption. No bodies hav e been found in the ash like those at Vesuvius.
Archeologists also reported that movable objects had been taken from
the city.An airfield is 6km/4mi southeast of Firá. Daily flights
from and to Athens; also connections with Iráklion (Crete), Mykonos
and Rhodes. A restaurant in Santorini was named "No Name" and
they all get pulled down after the tourist season is ended. Not sure
what happens to the cats!
We made friends with a couple who spent 6 months of the year in Switzerland and the other 6 months in Italy. By the time the evening was under way we had an Australian girl, and Albanian man, an Egyptian man, a Welsh couple and the Greek manager and the Egyptian chef joining us and we played charades to get our message across and said cheers in all the various languages. After dinner we went out the back and watched (and participated) in their greek dancing along with a bit of plate smashing, it was a wonderful night to end our stay.
Then back to Athens for a couple of more days.We were nearly a month
all up in Greece, Finished up by touring the mainland with a local bus.
Would go back in a flash, but keep telling ourselves there are too many
other places we haven't seen yet. More photos are on the photo page.
