Hawkesbury River Postcards-back to Australia-

The Beautiful Hawkesbury River
quickpick postcards

Deciding to have another local holiday just for a weeks break took me to the beautiful Hawkesbury region.

It was the month of October and the weather in general was fine. One rainy day, in fact it was a full blown storm, occured and then it was all over rover and back to being fabulous weather again,

There is some lovely scenery and towns along the Hawkesbury and more than enough houseboats to hire.

The houseboats are a wonderful way to explore the river although, like the narrowboats on the English canals, you have a record short lesson on piloting the boat.

Still with sunshine and the river at your disposal you may as well take the lesson, make it well learnt and enjoy the rest of the week with a well stocked fridge and cupboards so you don't need to keep going back to base stock up. Like the narrowboats it is a bit of a nervous start, but once you get going you take one thing at a time and enjoy the cruise. Probably the hardest thing was trying to hook a bouy when it was really windy. That tested your strength and disposition but a good stiff drink at the end of it always made it worthwhile. I noticed a popular way of fishing was for a bunch of men to hire a houseboat for a weekend and have a glorious time of it!

Yacht charters are a popular way of seeing the river also. None of these are cheap so it pays to shop around for a few prices first. The Hawkesbury seemed massive and it wasn't possible to go down and explore all the areas in a week. I thought that was quite long enough though and got to see a fair bit.

views of the hawkesburyOnce stocked with food and drink necessities you are free to roam the river, in fact you have to roam for a while to keep the batteries charged.

The marina is pretty much equipped with all you need but if you live in the state it would be easier to pack before you left home. Listening to the radio at night was a nice change from TV although you could watch that if you wanted.

The film Oyster Farmer was filmed on location on the Hawkesbury and at Brooklyn Marina. Send postcards of the Hawkesbury below.
