Saigon
We arrived in Saigon ( Ho Chi Minh City) on the 29th December so we could spend New Years Eve there, or Happy New Year as it was always referred to by the locals. Saigon is a vibrant city and I fell in love with it and it's people. Our hotel was the Liberty 4 which was very central to most parts of the city. Nha Tran
The trip to Nha Tran was pretty uneventful, except the train arrived early after a 10 hour trip and we had to wait for our room to be ready, The cyclo driver in Saigon, Nyun, saw us off and made sure we knew where the right platform was, so he was very helpful. We had a soft sleeper and they put on a special coach for foreign travellers. No one else joined us so we had the 4 berth compartment ...read more
Hoi An
The train trip to Danag was a bit different from the last one, my friend and I were in different compartments and I was in with a Frenchman and a Perth Vietnamese husband and wife who were back in Vietnam doing research. It didn't really matter though as everyone just hops in their bunk fully clothed and goes to sleep until it is time for the guard to wake you up for your stop. ..read more
Hue
Hue, I have to admit, just didn't have the charm of other areas, it is growing very fast with new hotels springing up everywhere but nevertheless it was a welcome break from travelling and is about halfway to Hanoi. The open bus was a very comfortable bus that took us along the coast and on top of the mountains with spectacular views. Hanoi
We arrived at the train station in plenty of time and the tickets were checked. We had the compartment to ourselves again until about halfway to Hanoi when a couple of American Vietnamese girls got on. The guard checked our tickets again and luckily the girls translated for us.. ...read more
